Hua Wen Zi Dian is an online Chinese dictionary made available by Malaysian Chinese Education Network. It provides two search methods based on "radical search" and "pinyin index". Each word is also marked with Chinese pinyin and phonetic symbols. There is a detailed interpretation of each word, but the dictionary-recorded Mandarin pronunciations are very different from that of other dictionaries designed for school children. The evolution of pronunciations has its own patterns, and dictionary editing also has its rules.
This paper analyses the differences between Hua Wen Zi Dian and Guo Yu Ci Dian Jian Bian Ben in one-word multi-tone recording with reference to Guang Yun. Tracing the source of pronunciations for multi-tone words, it is found that the differences are caused by negligence due to merger or unrecorded meanings by certain dictionaries. In view of the violations of the principles of dictionary editing, an in-depth study is therefore warranted.
