Abstract

In the early 20th century, Chee Poh Siah (reading club) established by the Chinese Revolutionary Party of China was a centre to propagate the ideas of revolution. The reading club was not only open to the public, but was also the office of the Revolutionary Party. Although most reading clubs were designed to disseminate Sun Yat-Sen's ideology, they were also meant to function as associations to serve the community. Most reading clubs closed down because of financial difficulties and were largely forgotten by the public. A few studies completed on the reading clubs have mainly focused on their connection with the Revolution of 1911. Their role as Chinese associations and their implications to the community were neglected. This study examines the Aik Koon Chee reading club of Batu Pahat to examine its functions, development and transformation between 1910 and 2015.
