Abstract

Social and environmental upheavals have adversely impacted the maintenance and preservation of culture and languages. Serdang New Village is the second largest New Village in Malaysia, with more than 90% of the residents being of Hakka descent, with the Hakka dialect being the main language of communication. Through questionnaire survey and personal interviews, this paper aims to investigate and discuss the use of the Hakka dialect, and the efforts to preserve the Hakka culture in the village. It is hoped that this research will provide relevant materials for the study of language use in the Malaysian Hakka community and the Malaysian Chinese society in general.
