Abstract

The term "pirate" originated from ancient Greek and Roman languages, and the definition of "pirate" varied over different periods. Moreover, there is no specific term for "pirate" that can be found in the Malay Archipelago lexicon. As the European peoples arrived at the Malay Archipelago to begin their colonial activities, all maritime raiding in this region was regarded as "piracy". Using this excuse, the colonizers expanded their sphere of influence and territory. However, modem scholars have begun to re-examine this "Eurocentric" view, refuting the Malay Archipelago maritime raiding as "piracy".
