This study examines the production of musical works for the Chinese orchestra during the Mao Zedong period between 1949 and 1976. The production and propagation of musical works under Mao’s rule may be categorized into three periods: the first period was early stage of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949-1966; the second and third periods coincided with the early and latter halves of the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1971 and 1971-1976 respectively. The paper discusses seminal musical works composed during the Mao period, and shows how these musical works matched the ideology of Mao and reflected the influence of political changes in China.
