Abstract

The background and situation of Japanese Overseas Chinese growing up have changed a lot compared with the past. In this paper, in order to recognize the diversity of the identity and language use status of the Japanese Overseas Chinese, a semi-structured interview survey was conducted on the cases of Japanese Overseas Chinese youths to explore their identity and language use status, and at the same time, an attempt was made to categorize the status of their identity and language use. It was found that the respondents in this study had complex backgrounds, with a wide variety of identity types and language use, mainly in three aspects: 1) each respondent's performance of identity and the strength and type of identity varied to a great extent; 2) the negative identity of Japanese Overseas Chinese Youth with their own identities decreased as they grew up; and 3) there was no conflict between identity and naturalization.
We hope to shed some light on the issue of recognition of overseas Chinese in Japan in the future.
