Ly Sing Ko was a leading journalist and editor of the Chinese press of Singapore and Malaya in the 1960s. As a Chinese expatriate, he tried to infuse elements of Chinese culture into his place of residence. He devoted his career in journalism to fight for cultural identity. Singapore and Malaya were administered independently during British colonial period. They merged to form Malaysia in 1963, but Singapore separated from the federation in 1965. Despite the environment in which English was given pre-eminence, Nanyang University (Nantah) was nevertheless established in Singapore in 1953. As the first overseas Chinese university in which the medium of instruction is Chinese, its establishment was subjected to heated debates. Arising from his love of mother-tongue education, Ly Sing Ko had tirelessly defended Nantah in its use of Chinese as the medium of instruction. This paper discusses several of the press editorials drafted by Ly Sing Ko in the 1960s to highlight his devotion to Chinese education.
