Abstract

As we all know, vocabulary is the basic element of language and the basis of language learning. The objective of this study is to apply the Total Physical Response (TPR) to vocabulary teaching at the preliminary stage of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in order to investigate the effectiveness of TPR on vocabulary mastery among Malaysian students at the Universiti Kuala Lumpur. This study also seeks to examine whether TPR can effectively improve students' memory of vocabulary as a means to reveal the value of TPR in teaching vocabulary at the preliminary stage of teaching Chinese as a foreign language as well as to provide a reference for local Chinese language teachers. This study adopts a quasi-experimental design. The research sample was divided into experimental group and control group with 32 students in each group. The experimental group used TPR to teach vocabulary while the control group used conventional teaching method to teach vocabulary. The research instruments of this study were vocabulary pretest and posttest. The data collected were processed and analyzed using SPSS software to obtain relevant conclusions. The results show that TPR is more effective in teaching vocabulary at the preliminary stage of teaching Chinese as a foreign language than the conventional teaching method.
